My Plate (Thailand) is designed to introduce the properties of nutrition, diet, and wellness through eating habits to young children. It gives a visual representation of the five food groups, that are essential for a balanced, nutritious diet. As a way to support overall well-being, it serves as a reminder to eat the correct portions. Specifically in Thailand with a heavy protein and grain diet, we tried to emphasize the importance of fruits and vegetables on a child's plate. Another goal we strived to reach is to encourage children to cut down their salt consumption.
This lesson plan is designed to engage children in nutrition education through interactive activities and worksheets. By following these steps, you'll create a fun and educational experience that helps children understand the basics of nutrition and make healthier choices in their daily lives.
Begin by showing a short video on Thailand’s version of MyPlate.
Discuss the MyPlate graphic, which divides the plate into five food groups: Dairy, Protein, Grains, Vegetables, and Fruit.
Split the children into four groups.
Distribute supplemental cards, each featuring an image of a food item, to every child.
Designate each corner of the room to represent one of the food groups.
When you yell "scatter," have the children determine the food group of the item on their card and move to the corresponding corner of the room.
Use the blank MyPlate on the presentation to guide children in sorting the food images into the correct categories.
Call on each child to place their food item in the appropriate section of MyPlate.
Afterward, have the children use the supplemental blank plate to draw and color their favorite foods for each category.
Introduce more complex concepts using the next set of slides.
Teach them how to read a Nutrition Label, focusing on what nutritional content it reveals and the normal levels of macronutrients for kids and adults.
Once the children have a solid understanding of these concepts, test their knowledge:
Have them distinguish important ingredients.
Practice reading parts of a nutrition label.
Choose the healthier option between different foods.
Understand the importance of natural versus processed foods.
